7 Types of Filipino Moms We’ve Likely Run Into

By Belle Mapa

Like ‘em, love ‘em, fight them and tearfully make up with them, our moms are a constant source of joy, strength and inspiration in our lives.

They share the same Bible verses and punctuate their sentences with two periods instead of one (or three). They love humble-bragging about their kids on Facebook. Don’t get us started on the monthly Mary Grace chika session. These days, it’s catching up and coping with COVID via Viber.

Chalk it up to it being a generational thing, or a culture thing. But they have their quirks and silly stereotypes, too, much like us. Which brought us to listing a few types of moms we run into. Any of these sound familiar?

The Mumshie

Has your grocery run ever gotten delayed by 15 minutes because your mom ran into a random kumare on Aisle 12? It’s like she knows everyone, including their neighbor and their dog. And, likely, everything about them. Lord knows how many Viber, WhatsApp, and FB groups she’s in. Mom’s hobbies include Zumba, going to SnR, Mercury, and then stopping for a mani-pedi. That’s how she gets her secrets. And that’s why she’s the gal you’ll want to learn social graces from.

Cool mom

A fine and rare breed among mothers. She’s a modern woman. Never setting much pressure on her kids. The total opposite of the strict, helicopter style we often hear of. She keeps her lines of communication open. No question is too daring for her kids to ask—hey, they’ll find out eventually, right? And curfews are guidelines more than they are rules. What’s cool is you learn lessons in maturity early with this mom.

Stage Mom

You can count on her to be there at every recital, every sports match, every school activity. Because she wants to support you and to be seen being your number 1 fan. Her Facebook wall (and, TBH, your house’s, too) is plastered with posts of you and your wins, big or small. She enrolls you in all the classes—from piano to chess—and makes you perform in front of visitors. (“Mom, no it’s so embarrassing!”).  Nobody can be more talented than her greatest pride and biggest love: You, her kids!

Tech-Savvy Mom

What a time to be alive in the age of Facebook and Viber. These moms love their viral Jo Koy vids and random unconfirmed facts on stock photos. Sometimes it’s a tough call, deciding if you’re going to add your mom back on social media. When you do, and once she’s liked every one of your posts, and you’ve seen every iteration of every Candy Crush ad, you realize the true meaning of “Ayan, kaka-computer mo kasi.” Just kidding. Love you, ma.

Spoiler Alert

We all know a mom who indulges in either her children or herself—or both! Her love language is gift-giving, after all. Likely living the glam life, this momma has every popular and trendy item and isn’t afraid to shower her kids with well-deserved gifts. She knows the hottest spots in town to take her kids or kumares out. And don’t get us started on her walk-in closet. Side note: Hey, Tita, we’re not saying drop your skincare routine, buuuut…

Cooking Mama

Yes, she do the cooking. Yes, she do the cleaning. And while this queen reigns over seemingly-feminine aspects of the home, she often packs a punch in the sass department. Is it the kitchen heat? We’ll never know. You can count on always being well-fed and healthy with this one. She likely has a home remedy for every ailment, too. If it isn’t Vicks or katinko. Don’t count your calories here, this mom says “I love you,” by saying, “Kumain ka na ba?”

Tiger Mom

We all know at least one. To her, anything less than perfect is unacceptable. For a Tiger Mom, her achievements are that of her children’s. Life may be tough and expectations can be high when you’re raised by a tiger mama. But it’s her way of pushing you to succeed and be your best self. Wait, why are you still reading this, ha? Go study.
