From One Race to a Lifelong Love: Laurent Joy Benig’s Journey with Running

By: Women’s Fitness Asia

Running wasn’t always on the cards for Laurent Joy Benig. In fact, her first experience with the sport was more of a fun activity than a fitness one—a vibrant Color Run event encouraged by her friend Rica. Yet, what started as a casual event soon evolved into a transformative journey that she describes as a work in progress, brimming with milestones, growth, and self-discovery.
Her first taste of true running came in March during her debut 10-kilometer race with All Women’s Run Asia. “I remember training for it, even completing my first 10KM on a treadmill,” she recalls with a laugh. “Back then, I thought 10KM was a marathon! ” That single event opened doors she never imagined, marking the start of a journey fueled by progress, challenges, and the joy of pushing limits.

From Cardio to Passion
Laurent’s entry into AWR Asia was serendipitous. As a jumprope athlete, she initially approached the invitation to race casually, assuming it would be a one-time challenge. “Cardio is cardio, right? I figured I’d finish the race and move on,” she shares. But running had other plans.
Her first race with AWR became an unforgettable experience. Surrounded by a community of strong, determined women, Laurent found herself inspired. “The energy was something else,” she beams. “There I was, gasping for air, running for my life, and just trying to finish—but seeing everyone’s spirit was incredible.”
Today, running is no longer just an activity for Laurent—it’s a love affair. Her once-casual approach has blossomed into ambitious goals, including completing her first marathon in Taipei. She’s even embraced Spartan races, merging her newfound love for running with her lifelong dream of adventure.

Running Toward Balance and Fulfillment
As a 36-year-old mother, businesswoman, content creator, and athlete, Laurent exemplifies balance in every sense. “Being the breadwinner since I was 19, I never had the chance to embrace an active lifestyle before,” she admits. Yet today, she’s living her best life, finding joy in every stride despite the challenges of juggling multiple roles.
Her journey also highlights the importance of community. The culture within AWR Asia is something Laurent treasures deeply. “It’s not about competing with others; it’s about competing with yourself,” she explains. “We celebrate each other’s wins, big or small, and that’s what I love most.”
Lessons on the Track and in Life
Running has taught Laurent invaluable life skills that extend far beyond the track. Resilience, patience, and consistency are among the key lessons she’s embraced. “Running teaches you to keep pushing forward, even when it’s tough. It’s the same in life—progress comes with small, steady steps,” she reflects.
Her advice to aspiring runners is simple yet profound: “Just give it a try. Don’t compare yourself to others, trust the process, and remember—practice makes progress!” For Laurent, running isn’t just about physical achievement; it’s also a time for reflection and prayer, offering moments of peace amidst the rush of daily life.
A Lifelong Pursuit of Joy and Purpose
Looking ahead, Laurent sees running as a lifelong pursuit. Whether chasing marathon dreams, enjoying shorter distances, or simply finding “me time” on the track, running is a constant source of joy and purpose in her life.
Through running, she’s not only discovered a love for the sport but also a way to give back—carrying prayers and hopes for those needing miracles with every step. In her journey with AWR Asia, Laurent Joy Benig has transformed from a curious participant to an empowered athlete, proving that every race, no matter how small, is a step toward something greater.
