The Sport Everyone’s Suddenly Obsessed With (And Why You Should Try It Too)

13

If you’ve been putting off trying a new sport because you’re worried you’ll be bad at it, pickleball might be the one exception worth making.

Most sports ask a lot of you before you’ve even had fun. You need the right form, the right footwork, months of practice before a single rally feels good. Pickleball skips most of that. It’s one of the rare sports where you can show up with zero experience and still walk away from your first session having genuinely enjoyed yourself.

Here’s why it works so well for beginners, and why it’s the perfect place to bring a friend or meet new ones.

The Learning Curve Is Almost Nonexistent

Pickleball borrows a little from tennis and a little from ping-pong, and simplifies both. The court is smaller. The paddle is easier to control than a tennis racket. The ball moves slower than most other racket sports, giving you more time to react. You don’t need years of hand-eye coordination training to hit a decent shot on your very first try.

Most people can learn the basic rules in about five minutes and be playing an actual, enjoyable rally within their first ten. Compare that to a sport like tennis or golf, where it can take weeks just to consistently make contact with the ball, and it’s easy to see why pickleball has become the sport people recommend to friends who “aren’t really sporty.”

It’s Forgiving, Which Makes It Fun

Because the court is smaller and the ball is slower, you have more time to react and more room for error. Bad serves are easy to laugh off. You spend far less time figuring things out and far more time actually playing, which means more laughing, more back-and-forth, and more of the good kind of competitive energy.

This forgiveness is exactly why pickleball tends to feel more like play than like training. Nobody’s standing at the baseline stressed about their form. Everyone’s just trying to keep the rally going a little longer than the last one.

It’s Social by Design

Pickleball is almost always played in doubles, which means you’re never really alone on the court. You’ve got a partner beside you, an opponent across the net, and usually a small crowd of other players rotating through nearby courts. It’s a sport that’s naturally built for conversation between points, for cheering each other on, and for meeting the people next to you between games.

That’s part of what makes it such a good entry point if you’re looking to build a bit of community around movement, not just get a workout in. You’re not isolated in a lane or tucked into a corner of a gym. You’re on a court with other people, actively playing together.

If that’s got you even a little curious to try, the timing couldn’t be better. Switchplay is introducing pickleball this month at Met Park, Pasay — a venue built for exactly this kind of multi-court, all-day energy — and it’s the perfect low-pressure place to give it a go.

What is Switchplay?

At its core, Switchplay is about introducing women to different sports. One of the most effective ways to try and learn something new, especially at this stage in life, is by bringing in a sense of play and not taking it too seriously. That’s where the name comes from. We switch through different sports, and we bring back the element of play.

Learning From the Best

You won’t be figuring this out alone, either. Coach Kyla, a UPCC Certified Level 1 Coach with multiple podium finishes since 2023, will be running the beginner court. Joining her is Coach Tetel, who brings 12+ years of football-honed footwork and conditioning into her Titan Hybrid approach to pickleball. Gear and equipment support from PickleballPH, our official coaches and equipment partner.

On court, you’ll also find Mizuno (via Primer Group), Titan PH, and Rudy Project on-site with gear on display, so if you’ve been eyeing the right paddle or a proper pair of court shoes, it’s a good chance to check them out in person.

Bring a Friend, or Meet One

If you’ve got a friend who’s been meaning to try something new with you, this is a good excuse to finally make it happen. Pickleball is genuinely more fun with company, and there’s nothing like laughing through your first wobbly rallies together.

And if you’re coming on your own, that’s just as good a reason to show up. Switchplay is full of women who are trying this for the first time too. You won’t be the only beginner in the room. You’ll likely leave with a few new faces you didn’t know when you walked in.

Fueling the day is Herbalife, alongside snack tables stocked with Carman’s bars, Fitbar, and a little something sweet from Lindt, plus Goodday Friz to keep you hydrated through the heat. Recovery is sorted too, courtesy of Starbalm, for whatever your first few rallies leave behind.

Either way, you don’t need experience. You don’t need a partner lined up in advance. You just need to be willing to show up and hit a few balls over a net with people who are excited to have you there.
